Historic Architecture and Modern Furnishings

Masuichi Kyakuden is made up of several historic buildings. The exteriors blend beautifully with Obuse’s townscape. Step inside and you’ll find refined, modern spaces. As you begin your stay, take a moment to appreciate the architecture and furnishings.

Old Roof Tiles
From the lobby, you’ll see stacks of old roof tiles kept behind the maple trees for repairs. New tiles would look out of place on buildings stepped in history. We are careful to preserve traces of the past.
Design
American designer John Morford stayed in Obuse while developing the hotel’s basic design, making use of earthen storehouses relocated from a sugar wholesaler in Nagano City and a document storehouse dating back to the Edo period.
Library
The library, housed in a renovated Edo-period document storehouse, is a cozy, comfortable place open to guests at any time of day or night.

Guestrooms Thoughtfully Designed for Relaxation

The designer envisioned “the kind of rooms where I’d like to stay when I visit Obuse.” From the striking use of glass in the bathrooms to the carefully placed furnishings and details, each element quietly shapes the space to enhance your stay.

Glass Bathtubs
Masuichi Kyakuden does not have hot springs or a communal bath. Instead, each guest room has a bathroom featuring a striking glass bathtub. The designer, John Morford, faced a dilemma: a wooden tub would evoke a hot springs inn while a conventional bathtub would feel like a typical urban hotel. Ultimately, he decided on a design combining glass, stainless steel, and tile. We invite you to fill the spacious tub with hot water and enjoy a relaxing soak.
Amenities and Comfort
We provide plenty of thick, plush towels so you can use them as generously as you like. Shampoo and other bath amenities are by L’Occitane, and the coffee is an Obusedō original blend by Maruyama Coffee.

Doing Our Best to Ensure a Comfortable Stay

This area may not offer all the conveniences of a city. That is why we strive to offer the best hospitality we can with what we have. Remaining true to the vision and playful spirit of the owner and the designer, we aim to make your stay a comfortable one.

Shop with Your Room Key
The room keys at Masuichi Kyakuden are oversized and reminiscent of the wooden travel permits used in the Edo period. At any of our group’s establishments, you can charge purchases to your room and settle the bill when you check out. Follow Kuri no Komichi (“Chestnut Lane”) through a scenic townscape that feels somehow familiar. When strolling around Obusedō, all you need to carry is your key.
Breakfast
Rather than a buffet, breakfast is served at your table, with dishes brought out in turn. Enjoy bread with seasonal jam and choose from a selection of egg dishes, such as plain omelets and Eggs Benedict, to get your day off to a pleasant, relaxing start.
